The lowest point in the world

One of Africa’s most striking geographical features is a giant tear across the earth’s surface visible even from space: the Great Rift Valley. Extending from the Middle East to Mozambique, the Rift Valley passes from the northeast to the southwest right through Ethiopia, endowing the country with some spectacular sites that range from hot, dry and barren places to a string of beautiful lakes.
Rising in the highlands southwest of Addis Ababa, The Omo River courses south for almost 1000 kilometers (620 miles) but never reaches the sea.
It is the Sole feeder of Lake Turkana, East Africa’s fourth largest lake, which the river enters just above the Kenyan border. On the fringes of the national parks, the lower Omo valley is home to a fascinating mixture of small, contrasting tribal groups. Lifestyles are as varied as the people themselves.
The Mursi and The Surma lead lives of harsh simplicity, uncluttered by the pressures and anxieties of the modern world outside.
